TAC Proud of its 76 Years in Pierce County
The Tacoma Athletic Commission was originally created as the Tacoma War Athletic Commission on December 30, 1942 to provide sports opportunities for the men and women of the armed forces at Fort Lewis and McChord Air Force Base. At its first event in January of 1943 the TAC presented a basketball game between Fort Lewis and the Harlem Globetrotters at the Tacoma Armory. Admission to the event was 85¢.
At the end of World War II, renamed the Tacoma Athletic Commission, the TAC began a series of fundraising events and activities for local youth and the variety of sports they played.
Celebrating their 76th anniversary this year, the TAC remains dedicated to the ideals and values that sports competitions provide and true to its stated mission:
- To promote amateur sports at all levels
- To provide financial support to high schools; colleges; sports clubs and organizations; and recreation programs throughout Pierce County.
- To recognize athletes, coaches, officials, and administrators for their distinguished service or achievement.
